Junior Project Proposal

Working Project Title: Just a little longer, then I’ll be all right

Proposed Medium: Video

Genre: Experimental Narrative

Stage of Development: Story boarding, scouting last location, shooting in progress.

Describe project in one sentence: Man obsessed with work longs to find escape.

Describe project in 250 words or less: A man overwhelmed with the demand of his job is constantly thinking about and wishing he could just go to a favorite spot by a stream in the woods behind his home to just have some peace, relaxation and to forget everything for a while. However when he does get there, his worries of work dead lines, accounts, project proposals, his boss’s expectations and a pile of bills he has at home, keep him from relaxing at all. He rushes back home to work on projects and bills but finds he keeps thinking about his favorite spot by the stream. Although he works on his responsibilities he is constantly drifting off and thinking of the stream. Again at work he faces goals of the workplace but feels like he needs to slow down. If he could just break free it would be OK. When he does get there again he can not get his mind off of due dates and deadlines. It frustrates him and pushes him further into depression.

There will not be any dialog, sounds will carry the viewer to where the man is in his mind, switching from what he is concentrating on and where he is to what he is dreaming about and where he wishes he could be.

Main goals to be achieved: Finish on time, 5.1 surround sound

Describe project in conceptual, theoretical, historical and cultural terms: Through the use of sounds, the viewer will see the what the main character is thinking about, how he is distracted and what is important to him at the time.

Many people are frustrated because they are not satisfied with what they have. They want a nicer car, more expensive shoes or a bigger TV. They are never satisfied because there is always something they don’t have. This man is one of those people. Now trapped by his over spending, he must work his job he would have otherwise left simply because it is good money. However, it barely keeps him ahead of his bills. He is constantly working but is unable to save because he is just getting by. This has him quite frustrated and very depressed.

This is just the kind of scenario that has caused a lot of the failing economy. Too much debt, living off of credit and trapped by increasing interest rates. Some working two or three jobs just to stay ahead. This man is fortunate to have a job that pays well, but that is little comfort to him when he has to look at his debt and know a very great majority of what he makes is going to someone else...and there is no end in sight for him.

Discuss technical pursuits: Will be shooting in HD and recording for 5.1 surround sound

Who will be the project’s audience? Students and Faculty at KCAI, Art space visitors, Film festival audience.

What will be the appropriate venue for you work? Art school such as KCAI Could be shown in an art space, Film festival that has a section for shorts and/or experimental pieces. Could be placed on YouTube site for KCAI digital film department.

How will this work act as a vehicle to your artistic and professional growth? I will get more experience shooting and working with my HVX, Final Cut and Soundtrack Pro. This will increase my work speed and better my understanding at how they work together. Will give me more footage to chose from for a reels DVD.

What are your primary influences? My passion for images, especially the moving image and my very strong obsession for cameras. Also a very strong desire to stay out of respiratory therapy.
